Share your thoughts on the Ebola virus pandemic.  What is technology's role in this issue?

  1. The technological role on Ebola is making everyone go nuts. The internet makes everyone say and hear things that aren't true. The only way someone can get infected by Ebola is if someone who has it sneezes, coughs, or has some projectile substance come out of there mouth. So with that being said if you know someone with Ebola just stay away. It's that simple, all you have to do is stay away.

  2. I think that people are overreacting about the virus. It is very dangerous, and if an outbreak occurs in the US then people can panic. There have been very few cases in the United States for people to panic over. I think that technology has contributed to the panic of Ebola. If stories about people dying from Ebola and then rising from the dead weren't on the internet people wouldn't be as scared about the disease as they are now. I think that story was a prank of some kind. It's a fact that Ebola is very dangerous but I don't think Americans have to worry as much as people are right now.

  3. I have a friend who worries day and night about getting Ebola. She wanted to cancel her cruise to the Bahamas in December because of it. I am, however, not that worried about getting Ebola. I believe as long as they contain the people who might or might not have it and stop travel between countries who have the highest Ebola numbers, we should be fine. Even though it is a scary virus, I refuse to sit and worry about getting it. Technology's role is sending out this information and sometimes false information. I have read countless articles about how Ebola got into North Dakota but they were fake. It makes people become more and more worried about it. Without technology, we wouldn't have known what was happening where this started.

  4. Ebola is a scary thing to be around. Technology these days have made people more and more scared about the virus. I'm sure many people don't even want to get on plane anymore. When reading the graphs on Ebola, I saw that Liberia only has 1.4 doctors to every 100,000 patients. To me that sad.... While we are sitting over here in the U.S have 245.2 doctors per 100,000 patients. I think they need to figure out a system to put at the airports in Africa to somehow test the people that are about to fly out for Ebola. I hope it doesn't spread seriously to the U.S or any other countries.

  5. Technology has only been detrimental to the entire Ebola situation. It has inflated this to be something that it isn't causing the public to be fearful for their lives. Ebola is not that easy to catch. It has to be passed on through bodily fluids which can be easily avoided. I also feel that the CDC is being a little too cautious. This is because of the story of the woman being quarantined for 21 days for helping treat victims in Africa, even though she was tested negative twice for having Ebola. Overall I think people need to chill out over this. Tekmira all ready has a proclaimed cure for Ebola, the EPA just needs to alter their regulations for using it.

  6. This Ebola pandemic has made many people nervous about traveling and also thinking that this disease may make an out break in north america. When a hand full of people who have went over seas to help is south Africa to help treat the people with this disease. People are taking this out of proportion but they also are just scared of what could happen. They are just making sure that this doesn't come here and start spreading across the nation. If it wasn't for technology there would be a way for people to know what this is, and how it is affecting people. It also is a negative part because people are comparing what they have over the internet and not going to see a doctor. People who have not travelled outside of the us to south Africa should not be scared about getting as they have not travelled.

  7. I think the Ebola is actually pretty scary. They talk about how its hard to catch, but I really don't think it would be that hard to catch. People who contracted Ebola, don't start showing signs for awhile. In that time, they could easily sneeze and infect a whole room. The could cover there mouth and cough then touch the door handle and 100 other people could touch that same handle.
Technology almost makes people go crazy. Its all over Facebook that North Dakota or a town is infected. You click on it and its just a "haha just kidding!!"
There are lots of rumors spreading that are not true.

  8. If you're saying you don't have a worry in the world about catching this disease, you're either nuts or lying to yourself. Nobody wants to catch it. Is it a slim chance that it comes our way? Sure. But this isn't a cold or flu, this is a life or death situtation. And not only that, but if you get Ebola, and make contact with someone without knowing you have it, or knowingly, you're basically killing that other person. I wouldn't cancel any trips or hide away in my house, but it's still in the back of my head. I mean, the disease has already killed four thousand people, why wouldn't you be worried?
Without technology, I wouldn't have heard about this. There has been false articles all over facebook, and I think that's probably not for the best seeing as how some people are terrified for their lives.

  9. I really liked the last link about Ebola facts, maps, charts and graphics. It sets the facts straight and gives you the information that you are never really getting from the media. This situation reminds me of the Documentary about Wikipedia and how the site is not completely reliable. The media gets information and spreads it without a lot of time spent on the information. Links like this help give American's the information that they need to hear.

  10. Technologies role in this whole Ebola issue is to let us know what is going on around the world. I don't think is that big of an issue if they just contain the areas and people where the virus has spread.

  11. Ebola is a very serious matter. This is a virus can kill you really quick because it starts eating away inside your body first. Technology plays a big row when we have serious things like this in the world. Now with technology we can find what whats going on and what it is before half of the world gets it like how it was before technology became about in this life time so if you ask me technology is not just for fun its actually saving people lives now.

  12. what i learn about Ebola is that it was discovered in 1976 and it was a strain. As Ebola continues to spread than we won't have the budget to make a cure to fight this virus. people have find out it is more deadly than HIV.

  13. My thoughts on the Ebola epidemic is that it is a virus that will continue to spread, only in West Africa, but only for a limited amount of time. West Africa does not have the resources and quarantine camps to stop the spread, however with increased technology and better quality health officials coming from all over the world to aid the sick, I believe it will eventually be cured. The World Health Organization are working on quarantine camps and finding a cure for the virus will be accomplished. I also believe that even though the Ebola virus has spread to the Western World, father countries like America, the virus will be contained because of the resources be used to treat it. Technology's role in this issue is WHO trying to find a curable procedure or vaccination to prevent Ebola or at least not contract it. A piece of technology called FilmArray, produced by a company called BioFire, is capable of detecting Ebola with a high degree of confidence in under an hour. This will help detain the Ebola virus.

  14. When I think of Ebola, one word comes to mind in better comprehending its effects: its more about education. In other words, with all the social information that is available of how one can contract Ebola, how long it takes to spread, and how it effects countries and their medical, security and educational resources, I can realize it comes down to one’s education and awareness of how to prevent Ebola.

Technology is an essential key in developing new drugs, and medicine resources to better protect medical personnel during their treatments. As well, as keeping track of the continuous spreading of the virus. However, I believe the epidemic will be more difficult to spread in Western, and more developed countries, because people are aware of the essential facts of Ebola and how to prevent it.

  15. Reading these articles I have learned a lot already about Ebola that I didn’t know. Things like there are four cases in the US, it’s the most contagious during the end of a victims life or it is really only spread through bodily fluids. Technology keeps us up to date on the disease and like it did for me helps me learn more about it. We have advances in technology to help treat the deadly disease compared to any other country. On the other hand technology is making people become so worked up about Ebola because it is talked about everywhere. Many just being hoaxes like how it is in North Dakota now.

  16. My thoughts towards the Ebola epidemic are this. This is no small matter, I like we should be taking this very serious. Ebola is one of the deadest diseases known to man. Its fatality rate is 50%. So yeah we should be doing everything we can to keep this under control. Technology plays a role through not only but helping to find a cure. But even through just keeping the citizens updated on the epidemic.

  17. Ebola is a very big epidemic that needs to be reckoned with. I didn't know it dated back to 1976. I think the technologies like social media has made it worse than it actually is. But i do believe in quarantining people that have traveled to west africa and back. It is a very dangerous virus and it need to be keep up to date on it but not cause a panic. I am thankful though that the U.S. has the technologies to cure it and save lives though.

  18. Ebola isn't nearly as scary as people think. It doesn't bother me at all. Technology is being used to create haz-mat suits and attempt to create a cure for the Virus.
