As the Christmas season heats up and another year draws to an end, here are some amazing pictures to highlight some of the events of 2014! What are some trends you see? If you were going to upload 2 pictures to summarize your life in 2014 what would they be and why? Being able to express our views and emotions in pictures that are so readily available to the public is a definite technological advancement of the past few years. In what other ways is it noticeable how technology has impacted our society based on this slideshow? Pick three pictures specifically and discuss the technological components present in the picture and how they are impacting our society?

There is a dog who is being hit by strong winds and it reminds me of when I walk to class in the freezing cold wind. Also in the first picture it shows people kissing in times square, and a lot of them have phones in the air videoing things. Then in another picture it shows a large amount of people in the middle east gathering for a funeral service.
ReplyDeleteThese pictures are mostly all pictures of extreme violence, there's some that are happy pictures but for the most part it shows how sad this year has actually been. If I was going to upload pictures to describe 2014, I would upload a team photo from last years softball team to show my first year of playing college softball. I also would add a landscape photo of one of my small adventures from over the summer. Technology is noticeable because it's easy for people to take quick snap shots of something bad happening these days. All it takes is the click of a screen. There are several pictures in the slide show about the civil war going on in Syria. The picture with the man holding the baby is both sad but also hopeful. The 'selfie' that Ellen DeGeneres uploaded to twitter from the Academy Awards became the most retweeted photo ever, the last photo is the one with the US soldier playing soccer with some children of Afghanistan. That was touching to me that the soldier put aside his feelings and fears and enjoyed himself with the scared children.
ReplyDeleteOne very obvious trend that I see is the kissing on New Years. I'm not sure how long this trend has been around but I haven't seen it before. If I were to upload two picture that would best describe me I would choose to upload, first a picture of someone doing something daring, like jumping from a plane, and secondly a picture of a famous foreign tourist place. I'd upload a picture of someone doing something daring because I feel like I would be a daring person if I were given the opportunity. The second picture I would upload being of a different tourist country would be because I enjoy traveling and exploring. I also like seeing and experiencing new cultures. I think one major way that this slideshow has shown our advancements over the past few decades would be the fact that this slideshow may or may not have been available for us to see back then. In this generation we are able to see other parts of the world and other cultures and get a feel for what they experience based solely on technology. My first picture i chose was of the riot in the streets of Venezuela. It shows the severity of the chaos in another part of the world. My second picture is the one of volcano. I think this one is just interesting honestly. It also shows us a natural disaster in play which is rare to see. The third and final picture is of the boa consuming the alligator. The technology behind this picture lies within the ability to have technology somewhere that technology is usually not found, for instance the swamp.
ReplyDeleteI picked this picture because there is ice that is building in the north avenue beach in Chicago. The reason this is happening is that it's to cold outside and the water must have frozen.
ReplyDeletethe reason why i picked this picture is that the part of a house is being crush by a huge boulder. The reason way is that there was bad weather and it must have been rolled over by the force of the thunder.
I picked this picture is that these monks are welcoming a man to their temple in India . the reason is that the monks believe is the leader called the Dalai Lama.
If I was to upload two pictures one would have to be of my boyfriend that I began dating in February, and one of the beaches back home where I spend most of my summer days with friends. I would upload these because I learned more than I could ever imagine from these two things. From the beaches, I learned how proud I am to be able to say I am from PEI, because we have beaches fifteen minutes away from everywhere and it is gorgeous. And I picked Spencer because he's smarter than me and he teaches me things I'll actually use later in life like big words and math problems. I was amazed to see how incredible the timing was for the pictures, like when the leopard was invading that village the action shot they got of him jumping was pretty amazing. Also that we have technology and high end cameras in the poorest places in the world.. I find that a little odd because they don't even have fresh water to drink. They had a picture of a man on fire for Christ sake and they just watched him burn and took pictures.. like do people really think pictures are more important than someones life? Same goes for the thief that got beaten, people were snapping pictures of him looking at the camera while he was in pain. I think that is disgusting and wrong. I one of the most touching pictures was the wife mourning over the grave of her husband who was in the military.
ReplyDeleteOne of the trends I noticed is that mostly all pictures show violence or destruction.
ReplyDeleteIf i was going to uploaded 2 pictures to summarize my life in 2014 I would upload a picture of my basketball team and a picture of me and my friends from the fair. I would upload the picture of my basketball team because its from my first year of playing college basketball and the picture from the fair because it is one of the highlights of the summer.
The "selfie" that Ellen took from the Academy Awards went viral fast! It shows how social media can spread things fast. It was the most retweeted picture of all time.
The picture of the man just after being beaten in African Republic was super sad. Obviously that kind of stuff happens all the time, but it's really sad to see a snap shot of it.
The picture of everyone helping to help lift the train to remove that guys leg shows the goodness in our society still. But, one thing I did notice was that the person taking the picture could have been helping lift the train. It todays society, it seems to be that we don't even live in the moment anymore. We just want to take a picture and post it to social media.
I noticed that a lot of these pictures are dramatic or surprising pictures that you would not typically see a lot. There are some happy pictures but the majority of them in this slideshow are portrayed as violent or a dramatic. I would definitely add a photo of my team last year that describes what my life consists of. Second I would post a picture of the different landscapes that I call home, I love being in the mountains and enjoying time outside. Because of these technological advancements we can see these pictures we can witness the history we are making day to day. Back in the day it was just the things you were going through and you would later get an update days later in the paper or in the next morning. We all now get updates on our electronic devices that share tragedy's and news the seconds that they are happening.
ReplyDeleteIf i were to upload two pictures to summarize my life in 2014 the first one would be a picture of my “adopted” family (best friend & her dad). Glen and Katie Nelson have played a huge part in my life since the day I met them. Glen was paralyzed during a back surgery in November of 2013, the surgeon nicked his spinal cord. This year has been horrendous for Katie and I having to see our “dad” struggle with something he did not deserve nor ask for. Thought this was a very tragic year for me, Katie, Glen and I have become even closer than we were before. The second picture I would upload would be of the WSC volleyball team. This was a huge event in my life as it was my first year of college and college volleyball, which meant moving away from home and all my friends. I’m glad I chose to continue playing volleyball.
ReplyDeleteSome trends I see in all these photographs are that they are all very foreign to me- I do not ever see elephants sitting on cars, muslims praying, soldiers kicking around a soccer ball with children. Some of the stuff I’ve seen before- like a NYE kiss, a dog in the wind, etc. For the most part, I wouldn’t see most of these in my life.
Technology has impacted our society based on this slideshow because people are completely dependant on it. In the picture of the woman giving CPR to her 5-month-old nephew, I noticed that the lady crouching beside her was clinging onto her phone like it was what needed saving. I kept catching myself wondering “who was taking these pictures”? Like when people are being lit on fire and shot and volcanos are erupting my first thought would definitely not be- grab the camera!!
Three pictures I would pick are:
March 9: U.S. Army Spc. Taylor Burcham runs with a soccer ball that he gave to children near Kandahar, Afghanistan.
This is a photo of an American soldier playing soccer with Afghan children. Its good to see this stuff because when you think about soldiers, especially American and not the “peace keeping” canadians, you think they just kill everybody and war is horrific. Yes war sounds to be horrible, but you never hear about the good they do in the communities their based in.
May 9: Valentin Gruener runs with a lioness named Sirga at a private reserve in Botswana. Gruener helped raise Sirga since she was a cub.
At first I thought this was a wild lion chasing a person and I was a little worried. But very neat that private reserves exist.
November 13: Chandra Bahadur Dangi, the shortest adult ever verified by Guinness World Records, poses with the world's tallest man, Sultan Kosen, in London. Dangi is 21 ½ inches tall, while Kosen is 8 feet, 3 inches tall.
Katie, my friend mentioned above, is 6’4 and her dad, Glen is 6’6.. this is basically how I feel when I’m standing next to them. They are huge!
If I were to upload two pictures that summarize the year of 2014 for me, I would upload a picture of my basketball/volleyball team and the second I would upload would be a picture of my family. The reason being is that every memory I have from this summer has my family involved with it. Also the picture of my basketball/volleyball because most of what I did all year was working towards playing these sports. Technology is so important and has impacted society because we are able to do new things every day. Many of these pictures represented things that I hadn’t heard about and without technology I probably never would have.
ReplyDeleteThe first picture that really captured my attentions was the super cell thunderstorm in Sidney Nebraska. The second picture is the one where the elephant is relieving an itch on a small car in South Africa’s National Park, the people weren’t injured just shaken up. The third picture that caught my attention was of the Maryville-Pilchuck High School students who were grieving after a school shooting. The first and third pictures are very serious matters that happen everywhere throughout the world, I chose these because I hadn’t heard of them and they are both serious problems.
Technology is so important because it captures serious moments like in the first and third pictures but also crazy and funny things like the second pictures. I noticed many of the pictures show violence or controversy so that’s why I chose something like the second picture to show not all memorable things have to be like that.
When looking at these pictures, they all have a meaning to them. Whether it was happiness or something sad and drastic. If I had to upload a couple pictures so far this year, I would pick a picture from the North Dakota State Fair, it is one of the most fun times of the year. Another one I would pick would be a picture from Arizona when I went down there over spring break.
ReplyDeleteFor instance, the very last picture of the St. Louis Rams were holding up their hands in memory of the teenager that was killed in St. Louis in November. IT is telling the media and other parts of the world that it was a very important subject for everyone to know about. I am picking the one on Taylor Swift, she is using the technology in many ways, whether it is the microphone or the speakers behind her. She is giving us entertainment as well. the second picture im picking is the little boy being tested for ebola in Africa. The technology being used in the little hand machine looking into his eyes to see if he has ebola or not. This machine will help out the rest of the world also, it will limit the spread of ebola. the third picture I am picking is where the police officers were beating a women for pretty much no reason. You should never have to physically beat a women or even any human being. The technology being used is obviously the camera taking the pictures of the lady. The picture tells us how police officers around the world treat others.
The three pictures I chose were about the effects of protests and war in Ukraine, Venezuela, and Palestine vs. Israel.
ReplyDeleteI think the main way that technology impacted society in these pictures, was through the weapons and machineries to generate war. Furthermore, there is the surveillance technology that has evolved quite rapidly for the past years. Another way technology has impacted our society, has been through the media and its way of putting out there real life scenarios and particular moments that were share by different individuals.
For example, a lot of unpublished abuse on the riot students from Venezuela, were also captured by amateurs with their cellphones, IPads, cameras, etc. And the same scenario happened in Ukraine, and Israel/Palestinian war. Although technology has brought the sources of weapons to war, it has also exposed inhuman behaviors, and unique moments.
Like the picture of the Palestinian and Jewish soldier taking pictures of each other. In this particular situation, thousands of pictures of marriages, friendships, reunions, etc., showed the other side of the Jewish and Palestinian relationships’. These were posted on the media to counterattack the war between these countries.
I would upload a picture of a train because this summer I worked for BNSF Railway and it was a big point in my life because I almost gave up hockey to work there for the rest of my life. I would also choose an ocean view photo from California because I lived there for half a year for hockey and it was a huge learning experience for me and a place that will always be a part of me. Based on this slide show technology has advanced in such a way that whenever there is an interesting, devastating, happy or annual event happening we can simply snap a picture or video to capture that moment forever and relive the experience. For instance the picture with the jaguar leaping in a high traffic area in public causing people fear. People probably knew about that jaguar instantly because of technology.
ReplyDeleteA trend I see is that there is a lot of use of technologies like cell phones. For the first picture id upload and summarize would have to be The Northern Lights in England. I choose this because if you drive about 30 minuets north of Williston you were able to see the light show as well. For my second, I would upload the NASA launch failure. I choose this because i actually watched in on TV. Technology has impacted society by changing social norms that wouldn't have been allowed 100 years ago. For the first picture, NASA's Launch Failure because it was the first time ever that NASA launched an unman spaceship carrying 5000 pounds of supplies. It will impact our society because of the technological advancements with our space program. For the second, The Mike Brown Pictures because its a national issue that has split America. It will change our society because america will always have problems with race wars though social media sites. For my third, the dog picture because i recently got a new dog. It impacts society because the cameras today are so persice and catch ever fine detail.
ReplyDeleteAs the Christmas season heats up, the trends that I see are houses and businesses hanging up Christmas decorations. I see many discounted prices being sold at Walmart and more Christmas carols being played on the radio such as Jingle Bells while driving in the car. The two pictures I would upload to summarize my life would be the couples kiss in New York's Times Square to ring in the new year. The reason why this summarizes my life is the love I share with family and friends throughout the year, and also family and friends get together's during Christmas time. The second photo would be the Coton de Tulear dog is hit by strong winds on the beach in Lyme Regis, England. The reason being is I have a dog back home called Elli. She has really long fur,and she is one of the major loves of my life. Technology have affected all these pictures by advances in camera technology in which High Definition Resolution are innovated into camera's while also providing people to take multiple pictures within seconds to pick the perfect picture out of the many 100 taken in 3 seconds. This is what provides 'clear, perfect' pictures. The three pictures that I am about to list are all ones of disaster, most of the pictures on this slide which really summarizes hardships throughout the year of 2014, rather than the positives, which is quite sad. An ostrich runs by destroyed buildings in Bentiu, South Sudan, after government forces retook the provincial capital from rebel forces. A cornfield in Karo, Indonesia, is covered with volcanic ash following the eruption of Mount Sinabung. Riot police in Ankara, Turkey, disperse demonstrators trying to march to Parliament to protest Turkey's ruling party. These pictures that are taken at these moments are quite sad because the person that is taking the picture is taking it for popularity rather than helping the people that are in need like in a disaster. This is what our society has come to, fame before being a good human.
ReplyDeleteOne trend I noticed is that there were a lot of tragedies and they made the headline more than the positive things. I would upload pictures of WSC because I moved there and I'm moving after this semester and a picture of my new apartment in Grand Forks. Technology has affected our society by being able to show us all of the things that are happening in other parts of the world.
ReplyDeleteSome trends that I have noticed while going through theses pictures is that they are action shots. You wonder why they are taking a picture instead of being in the moment. Out of the pictures posted throughout 2014 I feel that certain picture are a very significant aspect to my life. One that impacted me was in Perth, Australia a men leg was trapped in between the train and the plat form. This photo doesn’t reflect me but my sister. She is off traveling in Australia and I hope if this would to happen to her or if she were there she would do the same thing/ people would help her. The second picture that impacted me that most was the one with the attack on the parliament building in Ontario. This only impacts me because I am a Canadian citizen and this was the first attack that allegedly was recorded. This event put many Canadians on the edge of there seats. Technology has impacted our society by having people take pictures of them in the moment of everyday rather then being in it with the people they are with. People take selfies everyday or of what they are eating. If you think about it they are with someone or could be with someone rather then alone. I have been with people who take 50 pictures a night when they go out, when there is me who might have one or two.
ReplyDeletekairo rutledge. I feel the same way as her
Deletethe two pics of my life would be one of me in TN the other in ND. I have lived in both states and I have ties to both and want to live in both for different reasons. So no matter where I live currently THere is always a part of me that is split and wants the other.
ReplyDeleteTHe three pictures form the slideshow I'd choose are the selfie celebrities, the Soldier and civilian taking pictures of each other and the texting ballerina. They all focus on cellphones in particular. Showing how they permeate almost everyone's lives no matter their station or wealth.
Some of the trends I see is a lot of tragedies more then good things. So it makes me think 2014 was a little depressing the some of the human population. For me, 2014 was the best year yet. My senior year was amazing. If I was to upload two photos they would be of my two state championships. One from baseball and the other from basketball. Those were the best moments of 2014, and some of the best moments of my life.
