I believe technology is greatly affected by decentralization. When people create websites and social media, they use input from the people around them to decide what they want to make. Maybe some ideas came from just one mind but I'm guessing along the way they asked input from some of the people closest to them. Another way is when the CEO of whoever is making the decisions about a company wants input, s/he might send out an email to the employees and ask them through the internet their opinions. In my opinion, technology is hugely affected by decentralization.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that centralization doesn't play a huge role in technology in our society. When it comes to technology it's pretty much a trying to figure out what people want by asking what the people want out of the internet. But I could see a person starting their own website and keeping control of it and how they want it kept up is how it is going to be.
I'm just going to be brutally honest in saying that I don't know too much about centralization and decentralization. But I did get to read a little about how they both work. It seems to me that decentralization is the go to organization because of how it interacts with its employees and grabs their input.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, centralization doesn't work so good in today's world. It is all about power and control by the top management positions in a company. However, there has been a good number of great businesses that use centralization. These few stand out, but overall decentralization looks like its more of a go to thing in organizations today. That being said, I would probably choose a decentralization company if I were to look for a job.
If you think about it, technology is like a centralization leader itself. Technology controls us in many ways. How many times have you found yourself sitting in front of the TV or a computer, and checked the time and realized its been a few hours since you sat down. We are part of a generation in which we rely heavily on our smartphones to stay in contact with social media or other people.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, technology could be seen as decentralization because we have the ability to use other things in order to do research or stay in contact with people. We can use books or the experience of others for research, we could use novels instead of a TV for enjoyment, or we could actually write a letter and send it through the mail, the old fashioned way. The difference between technology as a centralized or decentralized aspect is that we have the option to let it control us or not.
Very interesting thought in your opening lines!
DeleteWhen I think of centralization I think of a dictatorship, like Hitler. When I think of decentralization I think of a democracy, like our government. In technology, I believe decentralization is more prominent than centralization. For example, whether it be radio, tv, smart phones; no one is forcing anyone to listen to a specific station, watch a certain tv show or a buy a certain brand of tv, or buy a certain phone and get a plan through a specific company. We have choices; that is why I believe technology for us is decentralized.
ReplyDeleteIn someway technology is centralized for us. For example, the power my family uses to run all of these technology related things comes from Verendrye Electric. Living where I live, we do not have a choice who will supply us with our power. For our internet and home phone line, we don’t have a choice except to go through SRT. So we are centralized and forced to go through these companies. But, these companies are both co-ops. So as customers we do have some say in the company and share its profits and benefits.
When it comes to companies, they can either be centralized or decentralized. Centralized means that the company is ran by one indivual and he or she makes the decisions. Decentralized means that it is ran by two or more people and then they make the decisions.

When it comes down to these two terms, I believe that technology is based on decentralizing. The technology being used in todays world such as the Iphone and the Ipad, are well put together. That's why decentralizing is a great way to succeed. The more people the better. But centralizing is good for small businesses. But for the worlds sake, decentralizing is the way to go because out technology is growing tremendously.
Centralization means that authority in the company is centered at the top of the company and not really evaluated by any other management branches. Decentralization is required that all authority and decisions goes through all areas of management and delegated through them all. I think that technology is above our choices and decisions. I think that we can all get carried away in some sort of technology an any given situation whether it is with our phones, TV, computers, or with tablets. But with how much we get carried away or affected by technology do we the people really have a say in the direction we follow.
ReplyDeleteI think to be a successful company you have to reach out and relate to the average person. I hear a lot of musical artists say I don't write music for me to listen to its always what the people want to hear. I think that if technology took that path we would have advances in technology that would take it to the next level. For example it always seems like we keep coming up with new and improved phones but we never have a battery that would last us through the day. I think these small improvements would go a long way if their were companies reaching out to the users instead of competing with each other and the newest add on to the smart phone.
I’m not at all familiar with this topic but what I got out of it is having a centralized organizational structure there is only one person that really has a say in anything that goes on. You won’t have any confusion or controversy on what the final decision is because it’s whatever the boss says goes. I think though you could lose the respect or hard work of your employees. They could feel that their voice and opinion won’t make any difference. Also the boss might not know near as much about a topic as an employee does so they may not be making the right decision. On the other hand having a decentralized organizational structure you are hearing the voice of many people, their input is heard and acknowledged. You could have people making decisions on things they are familiar about. You have more people that can come together to brainstorm ideas to improve their project or product.
ReplyDeleteI feel having a decentralized organizational structure would having a greater impact on technology. Like I said earlier, you will have certain people that know more about an area than you do, so having their knowledge about it would be beneficial. You may go through tough times where not everyone is in agreement with a certain thing cut having everyone coming together to improve the product will help. I can see where in a centralized organization you wouldn’t have controversy because it’s the boss that makes the decision but you may not be making your product as best as it can be. Also when creating a website you want to know what the public likes so you need the input of others therefore it would be very hard to have a centralized organization.
Centralization structures rely on one individual to make decisions and provide direction for the company. This relates to the impact of technology on our society because in a centralized environment, there is one leader and everyone does what that one person says. The boss controls everyone- similar to the way that technology is slowly beginning to control humans. Many people today, including myself, feel “empty” or “naked” without their phone in their hand or in their pocket. We have grown so attached to our technological devices that we would be very lost and confused without them. The article posted states that, “due to power being consolidated at the top of the organization, risk is great if the top of the organization becomes incapable of leading the organization, employees will feel less motivated to perform for the organization as they will not have an avenue for sharing their ideas on how to improve the organization”. Therefore, in relation to technology today, without our devices, our lives would be a mess and we wouldn’t be motivated to perform.
ReplyDeleteThe article states that “decentralized organizations are becoming more popular as the ability for organizations to decentralize increases”. Decentralized structures often have several individuals responsible for making business decisions and running the business. They rely on a team environment at different levels in the business. This relates to the impact of technology on our society because as decentralized businesses become more popular, singular names such as Steve Jobs or Michael Dell, will become unknown and big names such as Sony (which is already big, but no one knows who created Sony) will become more highlighted in our society. A single person will not receive credit for his/her accomplishments. Imagine if Bill Gates, the creator of Microsoft, would have created a decentralized company- he would likely not have as much money as he does because he would have to split it with coworkers and he would not be as famous as he is because again, he would have to share the fame with the co-creators.

From what I got from the article, having a centralized company means the CEO makes all the decisions and is in complete control. Having a decentralized company, the power is more spread out, and ideas and concerns can be discussed. Centralized companies are the thing of the past. Most of the companies nowadays are decentralized. I believe this is true because the more input you have on a subject or idea, makes for the best chance of success.
ReplyDeleteSo I believe technology is affected mostly by decentralization. Most of the technology in todays world doesn't come from just one brain. Somewhere in the process other people were involved. Whether that be an idea for improvement, helping with blueprints, or even just a simple suggestion. When you are running a centralized company you never find out what other people want. Its all about you, the CEO which in my opinion you cant get very far with that attitude in todays society.
Centralization is to bring under single authority while decentralization is to distribute the administrative powers or functions over a less concentrated areas. I believe that centralization vs. decentralization is a big difference between declaring bankrupt and making huge profit (sometimes). For example, a big company like 'Apple' has a whole team of entrepreneurs, innovators, and inventors creating new 'Apple products' (IPhone 5) yearly. All these people communicate and mingle with each other to provide the best quality products available on the market. If Apple only had one person deciding which products to produce and sell then Apple would surely be a failed company, with Microsoft leading the way. Steve Jobs could have not fun the company and made all the important technological decision making to contribute to the future of society.
ReplyDeleteThese new advances in technology have shaped the world we see today. Steve Jobs former owner of Apple, was smart enough to find a group of experts in the field of technology and made them all decide on one product that would most benefit society. If Apple did not have these expert men and women than the products that we see on the shelves today will not be advanced, updated, and functional. To make one product like the iPad, each individual worker would create one small component of iPad, for example the design of it while the other works on creating a new installed app like 'Notes'.
All these examples I have provided I believe have led to a strong case on why Centralization is an old outdated form of decision making and that Decentralization, working in teams is the new and improved way to provide top of the line technological products that would benefit society in the biggest ways possible.
I think that technology relates to our society in more of a decentralized way. For example, in a decentralized government, the head CEOs are not the leaders of the crew. They don't determine what people can and won't do as a single person. In a decentralized system, the power is separated into divisions, so that others may make decisions in the best interest of the company. In many ways, this relates technology to our society today, mainly including the fact that technology has given more power to people in the way of knowledge and opportunity. Anyone, nowdays, can go online and learn almost anything they want to and, or, find a way to gain the knowledge to do so.
ReplyDeleteTechnology differs from a centralized system in the way that technology is not controlled by one party. There is not a single person telling us how to use technology; however, there may be occurences where we are limited to what we can do with it. Overall, though, I feel that technology is primarily related to a decentralized system.
If I was a CEO of a company I started, I would like it to run as a decentralization. It would be ran like more of a democracy. It would allow me to introduce an idea of a product that my team and I could make main stream. Also if I ran a decentralization, it would allow employees of mine to help improve the product with their knowledge of expertise. I feel that running a decentralization would be a better way of staying on top of things like keeping the company in order. Decentralization would also be able to keep different departments working together on different products. So if I was a CEO, I would like to use a decentralizational approach to keep advancing our ideas.
ReplyDeleteDecentralization works very well for technology theses days. It allows more people to have a say on what goes into a product. When more people have a say, the product can be better produced. Decentralization sets up the company and product for success.
There are two types of organizational structures that are found in the business environment, they are both centralized and decentralized. Each structure offers advantages and disadvantages for business owners. “Some companies determine that the best way to manage their fleets is by decentralizing fleet management; others believe centralized fleet management is the most efficient and cost-effective.” Centralized organizational structures rely on one individual to make the decisions and to provide directions for the company. Small businesses usually use this structure since the owner is responsible for the company’s business operations. Decentralized organizational structures often have plenty of individuals responsible for making business decisions and running the business.
ReplyDeleteDecentralized organizations rely on a team environment at different levels in the business. Individuals at each level in the business may have some autonomy to make business decisions. Centralized organizations can be extremely efficient regarding business decisions. Business owners typically develop the company’s mission and vision, and set objectives for managers and employees to follow when achieving these goals but on the other hand decentralized organizations utilize individuals with a variety of expertise and knowledge for running various business operations. A broad-based management team helps to ensure the company has knowledgeable directors or managers to handle various types of business situations.
I am not fond of centralization. I think that decentralization can benefit the world more when it comes to jobs and peoples opinions in the work area or even inventions. I know that when someone tells me their beliefs, I can take some of what they think and put it into what I believe. Hearing other peoples ideas can influence others and it could be for better or for worse.
ReplyDeleteA fine example of that would be that if you were to put one scientist into a lab and tell them to find the cure for cancer. The chances of that one person finding it is next to slim, unless their some super hero that knows everything. You are better off to put a dozen scientist together to share their ideas and learn from each other, expanding knowledge and maximizing our chances of finding a cure.
Technology I think is very centralized. You have so many products like your phone, TV, laptop etc; but how many of those things do you really need? I mean a laptop is very handy, but you can watch TV on it, as well as your phone. My iPhone is beyond brilliant. Those things can tell you the time, weather, store notes and important dates for you, it will connect you to Facebook and notify you when it's someone's birthday (this has saved my butt more times than once), and you can watch youtube straight from your phone instead of your laptop. Then we also have the iPad which I believe is only for the bigger screen, and it is because it is. You're less likely to drop your iPad in the toilet, or lose it when you are drunk only because it is bigger and people can't carry them around in their pockets like an iPhone.
I love technology, but I am so scared that our world will one day be strictly technology. We are getting so lazy that we now don't even have to go to class, just lay in bed and do your assignments there. I hope that some day we will become more decentralized, and be able to put our toys down and look at the world we used to, and not become coach potatoes.
Each idea, centralization and decentralization has their disadvantages when considering their impact of technology with society. Decentralization is allowing decision-making to be shared across the company and ideas can be shot off of each other to make the organization are more diverse area. This type could only work in certain areas or else the product could possibly fail. Some people may believe that there idea could be genius but when explained to others could possibly be a failure. This would be best before it hit production, as money would have been spent on the product rather then on the time for rejecting the idea. It is easier to have happy employees rather then un-happy due to them possibly turning on you and destroying the company. With technology it allows company’s to be able to reach out and communicate with each other’s.
ReplyDeleteCentralization includes only having one or two minds involved in the idea process. This allows them to have more control over what there company shows to the public. Having this can stop what the public sees if the idea is not what the owner was wishing for. This can gives them full liability for every situation and gives them no one blame for any mistakes but themselves. Sometimes having to many opinions can over whelm someone and then this leads to mistakes and business crashing down. In this area for technology apple is an example with the iPhone. Steve Jobs made it so it would be one way only. Now that he has passed on and someone else is in charge they are bring in decentralization and the company is the same but in some eyes and areas is better.
An example of centralized vs. decentralized impact, it’s in, how certain companies (Google for an example) are no longer controlling work hours, but rather measuring the productivity of the employee, regardless of how many hours are spent in the office (jobs that do not necessarily involve personal customer service) vs. companies that hold fixed hours; in and out check out. Even though it is fair to say that this idea does not work for every employee, it’s an interesting process, to see if the company has tendencies toward centralization vs. decentralization.
ReplyDeleteFor most, employees are quite aware of the basic business process, how they work and what the objectives are. With all this information, people not only want to succeed in their job, but want to feel part of the company’s success. Therefore, today, employees have more opinions towards a specific subject. Not only, the information is expanding, but our rights of speech have helped the decentralization take place in cooperation’s. Thus, if a corporation wants to continue acting in the market, it must brainstorm ideas and take advantage of the employee’s intellectual capacity to generate these new ideas, new processes, better marketing, new products, and new ways of thinking. And technology takes a good part in these changes.
As other companies begin to take this new role, and adapt to new ways of working, they also understand that the process of change continues with the client, third parties, investors, etc. Moreover, this creates an opportunity to identify where centralization and decentralization is affecting the company's productivity versus being stagnated.
there are watches we can use now phone iPhones and Samsung phones and its just making our technology so much better
ReplyDeleteCentralization vs. Decentralization is best summed up through example. Governments have been arguing about these two forms of power for decades, its fascism and monarchy vs.democracy and capitalism. They both have benefits on paper, Cent. has the benefit of faster decision making and a single and similar type of outcome, but can consistently be wrong. While Decent. made decisions are usually more accepted by more people and they have flexibility that centralized powers don't usually have.
ReplyDeleteThese two distributions of power in corporations have both been used, but in recent times centralized systems are being dropped in favor of the more open and relaxed form of power. CEO's have less power in companies like Google, have branched out and have excelled in the technology; with email, and mobile Os's and even minor failures like Plus. But even with their failures these kind of companies are known for do many different things that they as a company are not considered failures. Decentralized power structures allow for broader goals and more projects; they are simply more useful in the technology world since technology is always moving forward and a person's passions might not.
