Who is laughing now?
It seems as though many trends in technology start out by causing people to shake their heads and say "that will never become popular!" And before we know it, we don't know how we lived without that certain technological advance - Facebook and Cell Phones are prime examples! :) Here is another invention that might be heading right down that path. When these glasses were first introduced there was a large crowd laughing that they would never become mainstream. With the new improvements, they might just be the next big thing we start to wonder how we ever lived without! What do you think? Find another example of some"outrageous" technology that either became hugely popular or became a joke (Hello Snuggies!)

I think improving on the fashion side of this is a smart idea for the company to make. Most people won't buy something unless it is considered "cool" or "fashionable." I also think technology is getting out of hand. I really don't think it's that hard to pull out my phone and do something that the Google glasses can do. The new thing that I find became a joke is pajama-jeans. I don't know anyone who has ever bought them before and the only way I have even heard of this is through the TV commericals.
ReplyDelete*My example for the way technology is affecting us is by the way some things get spread around. Take Jennifer Lawrence's "nude pics" for example. Before you had to be face-to-face to see someone's birthday suit, now you can just get it online.
At first hearing and seeing these glasses, yeah you're like what the heck? Why would anyone ever wear those? But, I really think they could become something of the future. They remind me of glasses like a spy would wear in a movie or something.
ReplyDeleteWay back in the day Zubaz were super popular. Then they died off, and then about 2 years ago they became super popular pants again. Like who wants to wear crazy colored zebra pants? In my high school, whoever had the pants would set off a day once a week and all wear them. They would take pictures and post them to social media. I believe social media had an impact on bringing zubaz back.
*Robin Willams death. 10 years ago it would have took a couple days for everyone to actually hear about it. Now, people knew within like 5 hours because of social media.

ReplyDeleteIt seems to me like little fads are always starting up and then dying out quickly after that. I found a list of examples of things our society does that will seem really dumb in a few years. The list consists of many different slang terms, or phrases that sound pretty ridiculous now but we are all guilty of using them. Examples include things like hashtags, text message emojis, the word 'swag', and countless other things that our generation is obsessed with right now.
ReplyDelete*When someone dies unexpectedly, unfortunately everyone will find out very quickly through social media.
My example is Occulus Rift. Occulus Rift is a system created for extreme gamers, in which, the gamer would wear a headset/pair of googles that would simulate actual 3-D game play. The system takes the player into the game and makes it feels as if they were actually in combat, and or war. I feel that this system has a very promising future ahead of itself due to the increasing size of the gaming community as a whole. Occulus Rift currently offers a beta for sale if anyone is interested in it.
ReplyDeleteMy idea from the last class period on how technology has improved society is the idea of enchanced oil recovery, for example, fracking. Fracking has been around since 1973, all though it was never used very much. However, with today's improved technology, we now have the option to reach depths we haven't been able to before, as well as drill in different directions. Consequently, we are able to reach and extract up to ten percent more oil.
I think that the Google glasses are both cool and creative. It's not every day that you get to put something on that makes you feel like a spy. I personally have never tried them, but they sound intriguing.
ReplyDeleteI found a new technology, that is more eco friendly then popular. I searched up on the web for technologies and I found a Bluetooth UV ray bracelet. It looks pretty cool, but I don't know if I would personally wear one.

Something that became hugely popular is the XBOX, which has been around for almost nine years. I feel like technology has affected this because it is ever changing, just when you think you have the newest one, a new and improved one comes out. Also XBOX can be used for others things than games like movies or the internet. I think as time goes on this will stay a huge deal in society. I feel this has had somewhat of a negative effect on the youth because it takes up so much of their time but that's what keeps the XBOX going and improving.
ReplyDeleteMy answer from last week would be instant replay. This is changing college and professional sports. Referees are able to look back at a game changing play to determine if the right call was made or not. Sometimes this can change the outcome of a game. You always hear on ESPN the day after a big game how this play would have changed the game and how more times than not instant replay changed it or could have. Ten years ago this would never have been possible.
All in all, I've noticed that just a few years ago technology didn't even exist. Parents like my father grew up without social media and also without Cell Phones. As of today social media and cell phones have a huge impact upon kids lives. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram became a huge trend. I believe social media is good and bad because you find out about things happening all over the world instead of waiting to hear a situation on the news. Also its bad because people focus on being on social networks more than focusing on more important things going on with their lives. Social networks and Cell Phones are corrupting lives and I believe cell phones are corrupting lives because people text while driving which causes accidents, kids worried about their cell phones more than they worry about their school work. I believe the company for these glasses would make a great value of money but I truly don't know anyone who've brought the glasses.
ReplyDelete*My example for the way technology is affecting us is by the way some things get spread around easily across the world. Using "Chris Brown" as an example. The bad situations he gets involved in is always blown up. Facebook and twitter is always noticing and sharing information that has happened whether it's a good situation or a bad. Everyone notices it with or without having to watch the news at a specific time."
Another example of some “outrageous” technology are Heely shoes. Everybody wanted them when they first came out- what was cooler than a pair of shoes with wheels?! To an 11-year-old, nothing. I wanted a pair SO bad but my parents wouldn’t buy me them because they were a waste of money and they said, “they will go out of style”. In 2008, when Heelys first came out, all the cool kids had them and everybody wanted them. Now in 2014, we all look back laughing saying “do you remember those shoes that had the wheels on them?!” They went out of style almost as quickly as they came in. I had to Google what they were called today because I couldn’t even remember.
ReplyDeleteBeing an athlete, technology has affected the sports world immensely. Being the daughter of a broadcast technician, I get to hear about all the latest cameras and camera angles used to film NFL games as well as the Olympics. The first video camera to come out with picture AND sound was in 1984, and obviously sports have been around since way before then. Today, technology has changed the whole game of sports- not only broadcasting games all over the world, but also providing athletes with feedback. Being a volleyball player, I’ve always enjoyed watching game film from the weekend before. My dad would come to all my tournaments and film every game and the second I got home I would plug the camera into my computer and spend countless hours revising every point. It’s amazing what you see when you watch the games after- how out of position you were on defence, how easy to read that setter dump was and how late you are to react to an attack. Sports would still be sports without the technology we have today, but there would be a much greater leap between the mental and physical aspects of the game.
The touchscape coffee table is something outrageous that I can see taking a big hit with our society. There is no reason why we need a coffee table with a touch scape when we already have the tablet and super huge smartphones. Although, I can see this taking off. We like to use anything we can that will make things easier for us.
ReplyDeleteIf I were a teacher than I would use this a lot for some one on one with the student. it would be easier for them and me. It would help me with explaining and then with showing them how things are done.
At first when I saw these glasses I thought they were kind of goofy. These glasses tell us around the world that technology is rising tremendously. At first, the glasses were kind of weird and useless if you ask me. But after reading the article, I think that they are kind of cool now! it now seems that we are in the future now.
ReplyDeleteThe ALS ice bucket challagne and the polar plunge and outrageous ideas. Why would anyone want to do that?? All because of social media, it spread around the world. Why would anyone do this? Well in case you didn't know, it did raise millions of dollars.
*when LeBron James got traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a couple other players and a huge deal with money. If it wasn't for twitter we wouldn't have known so fast about this breaking news in the sports area. Twitter and all social media makes everything get around so much faster.
I think that Google Glass will be the next main stream technology. I think that it will help out our society by opening a new door of technologies that someday could help the entire world.
ReplyDeleteThe iPhone 5S is an outrageous technology that has become hugely popular in the united states over the last year. They are so easy to figure out and they keep getting more and more advanced due to the advances in technologies.
During the Boston Bombing, people were in fear of there lives. People that were attending the event, had no clue who set off the bombs. I was really shocked on how fast media passed around the images of the bombers and how fast they were caught. If it wasn't for our technologies, police wouldn't have had a huge jump start on the bombers and they probably wouldn't have found the bombers.
Penicillin is an example of “outrageous” technology. Penicillin is a type of fungus that fights bacteria. It was first introduced in 1928 and then used in Antibiotics in 1935. Antibiotics is one of the most popular piece of technology used today because it saved the human race from fighting diseases in turn preventing death.
ReplyDeleteAn example of Antibiotics used is in World War II. A total of 62 million people died. Without Penicillin the death toll could have been 100 million. The diseases that were common in WW2 were Malaria and Diarrhea. Antibiotics cured these diseases and prevented further death. In conclusion, Penicillin is the most important piece of technology known to mankind. Reason being is because it saved lives and life is more important than advanced technology such as the Apple laptop.
I think that Google glass is a cool idea but I don't think that it will last. From the reviews I have read and watched I think that it still has some work to do or wont really catch on. If you looke around a room for people who wear glasses or even sun glasses you would notice that it is a very small portion of the class. I think that it would be inconvenient for most of everyone.
ReplyDeleteOutrageous technology can be more practical than we would ever imagine as time passes on. Smart Watches have been a big bust for 2013but might make a comeback with the company Apples rendition. The only problem isthat nobody really likes them. That was the whole problem with the original cell phone and the Google Glass.
The glasses to be honest seem a little over the top to me because i dont think people need to be staring at a computer more ththan they already do but thats just me. They really might just be the next big thing. I feel they are some what of a good idea but they could be somewhat of a problem also. Take texting and driving, we already have people doing that and getting hurt. You dont think people will wear them while you drive and crash? The thing i found that is ridiculous is the banana container. nobody needs that.
ReplyDeleteMy idea from last class period is the ability to know anything about any sports team that you desire say you missed a game or something you can instantly look up the score, see who did what and watch highlights immediatly.
The new Google glass product is a good example of how technology is progressing and where it is going. Even though, I don’t find it practical in one's daily activities, assuming that a “new idea won’t work” is a way to stay behind in the technology progression.
ReplyDeleteThis “out of the box” glasses, reminds me of how online university courses were considered as an incompetent idea for education. Nearly 20 years ago, one wouldn’t even think of studying online, as it was considered an inefficient way to learn. The program was laughed by academics, and rejected by many students as well.
However, today, having an online class has become common in most
education programs. According to the public radio NPR one out of five students in the United States take an online course. Who would say that studying online would be a productive tool, and an incentive to other students?
Hence, there is no denying in how technology has brought efficient progression to education, and how it continues to evolve new ideas, whether these become useful or not in the future.
The Glasses are a very cool idea since they emulate the experience most people look for in a phone. Something they never have to take their eyes off of, to take pictures of their food and ask questions to to settle arguments.
ReplyDeletebut then there are things like the Zune. The Zune was microsoft's answer to the Ipod. Very few people have ever heard of the Zune, it failed so hard it vanished off the face of the planet. It was nice hardware but lacked any kind of apps.
